COMMUNITIES across north east Fife came together on Sunday to pay their respects to those who have fought in conflicts across the globe.

In Cupar, around 30 wreaths were laid by representatives from a wide range of organisations including the Cupar branch of the Royal British Legion in Scotland and Fife Council, as well as by members of the armed forces.

The ceremony, held at the town's war memorial in cold but sunny conditions, began with a short parade from the Fluthers car park to the monument.

As in previous years the service was inter-denominational with representatives of all Cupar's churches taking part and offering prayers for those who have fallen in the line of duty as well as for those who continue to serve their country.

It was also attended by North East Fife MP, Sir Menzies Campbell, and Sir John Gilmour on behalf of the Lord Lieutenant of Fife, as well as by pupils of Bell Baxter High School.

May Rankin, who organised the event on behalf of the Cupar branch of the Royal British Legion in Scotland, said it had been well attended by both invited guests and members of the public.

She said poppy collections in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday — which this year highlighted the plight of those serving in Afghanistan — went well in Cupar.

Services and wreath-laying ceremonies were also held in many other north east Fife towns and villages.

A short service was also held at St John's Church in Cupar on Wednesday, Armistice Day, when tribute was paid to all those who have served their country.
