Cupar rocks to Elmwoodstock

CUPAR rocked to the sounds of some of Scotland's top bands on Saturday when the first-ever 'Elmwoodstock' music festival was held in the grounds of Elmwood College.
Although the 5000 fans that were hoped for fell short of the mark, the ambitious event was hailed a great success and talks are already under way with a view to staging a second festival next year.
Those who attended were rewarded by sensational performances from headliners Idlewild as well as Sergeant, the Commitments and local band State of Affairs, who proved so popular that they were asked back on stage to perform an acoustic set.
Fears of any trouble proved unfounded, and according to organisers the security staff on site had nothing more to do than 'stand around and look menacing!'
The college's guidance manager Karen Thirkell, one of the event's co-ordinators, said that she had heard only positive comments about Elmwoodstock, both from those who attended and the Cupar public.
She said: "We didn't make the numbers we'd hoped for, but since it was the first year we weren't totally surprised.
"Many people were put off by the weather forecast but the rain didn't materialise and it was a terrific day.
"We had lots of compliments about the sound quality and the general organisation of the event.
"We had in excess of 1200 people there, and there was a great family atmosphere. The bands were fantastic, they did us proud.
"A huge amount of organisation has gone into Elmwoodstock and the students played a big part in that, particularly last year's student president Steven Hunter.
"We hope to be able to repeat the event next year and that it will be even bigger and better."
Proceeds from Elmwoodstock will go to Friends of the Earth Scotland and local charities.
