ORGANISERS of the Big Tent, Scotland's Festival of Stewardship, chose Earth Day, April 22, to launch an eco campsite for this year's event in July.
It's planned to reserve a section of the 500-space site as an 'orphanage' for tents and camping equipment that may have been discarded and lying abandoned in people's sheds or cupboards.

The third Big Tent Festival, described as Scotland's largest eco festival, will take place in Falkland on July 26 and 27.

Programme director Mike Small said that as well as the recycled tents, the campsite would also trial compost toilets and solar showers and lighting.

APPROPRIATE

"Our recycled tents will be assigned new guardians, most likely some of our volunteers who help us out over the weekend," he said.

People will able to bring along their own tents, while there will be bespoke tents and equipment available for hire.

"It's appropriate on Earth Day that we launch our new eco campsite as this is the day that millions of people across the planet choose to commemorate the birth of the modern environmental movement," said Mr Small.

American Senator Gaylord Nelson organised the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970.

Mr Small added: "As ecological crisis continues to mount, festivals need to be celebrations of the efforts of everyone looking for real change, but also practical examples of alternative paths.

"The throwaway society is redundant."
