As well as being awarded gold in the large village category, the Falkland in Bloom committee also scooped the Royal Horticultural Society's 'Local Roots' award.

In addition, committee secretary Bert Allan was also named 'community champion', one of just six people across the country to be given the accolade by sponsors Shredded Wheat.

Former chairman Keith Jackson said he was delighted with the recent run of awards for Falkland.

Commenting on achieving the Local Roots accolade, he said: "We studied the criteria for this award very carefully and we are very pleased we have been successful.

EMPHASIS

"We place a lot of emphasis on working together with the Air Cadets Conservation Group, the Falkland Stewards and the Fife Conservation Group.

"When the judges came the quality of the hanging baskets and tubs was self-evident so we concentrated on showcasing the work we have done to improve the environment and promote sustainability throughout the community."

Praising judges for recognising the hard work of community champion Bert Allan, he added: "This is a well deserved award. As past chair, I know how hard Bert has worked over the years and the commitment he has given to Falkland in Bloom."

RHS judges Martyn Hird and Sue Wood said they were impressed with the effect Falkland In Bloom has had on increasing tourism, and that everyone can be involved in the committee's work whether an expert or not.

EXCELLENT

Making special mention of the efforts made by the Lomond Hotel and Luigino's restuarant, the judges also said Falkland exemplified excellent involvement from all sectors of the community, sowing, growing and planting and the subsequent maintenance.

The ceremony, held at Chester Race Course on Wednesday evening, was attended by over 450 gardening enthusiasts from across the country including five members of Falkland in Bloom.

Scotlandwell also triumphed in Britain in Bloom with a silver gilt award in the small village category.
