A PLEDGE to spend £45 million on upgrading the Kingdom's roads has been met with delight in north east Fife.
Complaints about the area's road network, which is littered with hundreds of potholes following the recent spell of wintry weather, account for more correspondence than any other issue according to Taybridgehead councillor Tim Brett.
Welcoming the decision by Fife Council's Liberal Democrat/SNP administration to make the substantial investment over the next few years, Councillor Brett said: "Complaints about the state of the roads form one of the largest issues that councillors receive.
"The fact is that the previous Labour administration cut the roads budget over the last 10 years, as it had other priorities.
"As a result, Fife is only 15th in the league table of how our roads compare to those of others councils in Scotland."
Howe of Fife and Tay Coast councillor, Donald Lothian, also welcomed the investment pledge.
He said: "It is generally accepted that the overall condition of our roads and pavements should be better, as can be seen in most communities, including those in the Howe of Fife and the Tay Coast.
"This has unfortunately been the case for years.
"But with the prevalence of potholes at this time of year caused by the wet and freezing road conditions, it is far more obvious."
But Councillor Lothian added: "It must, however, be borne in mind that major road repairs and reconstructions are very expensive, and while £45 million is a lot of money it will only go so far."
