FIFERS are recycling their rubbish more than ever before, according to Fife Council's latest figures.

In June 11,764 tonnes or 50.2 per cent of household and commercial waste was diverted from landfill, the best ever monthly performance by the council.

This result helped ensure the recycling and composting performance for the first quarter of th
e financial year hit 46.5 per cent, a Fife record for any quarter.

Over the same three month period, the amount of waste that the council landfilled fell by more than 3300 tonnes compared to the same period last year.

Environment, enterprise and transportation committee chair Councillor Tony Martin said the figures showed Fife Council was on its way to becoming the leading green council in Scotland.

He thanked people for their efforts and also paid tribute to the Fife Council employees responsible for collecting and processing waste that is recycled and composted.

"These improvements could not have been realised without the input of a large number of staff, including refuse collectors, waste treatment staff, recycling advisers and strategy officers.

"We have come a long way in recent years but there is still much to do if we are to achieve our goal of putting zero waste to landfill by 2020, " said Councillor Martin.
