AFTER months of hard graft and meticulous planning, the Cupar Arts Festival finally gets under way this weekend.
The two-week extravaganza kicks off tomorrow (Saturday) and will feature a host of events in the fields of visual art, music, film, literature and more.

And things are set to start with a bang, in the shape of a cabaret night at the Corn Exchange.

Compered by Milton Balgoni, Saturday's show will feature comedy from Vladimir McTavish and Keir McAllister, as well as toe-tapping music from The Black Cat Jook Band and Joon Broon and the Readers' Wives.

Anyone heading along is guaranteed an evening of top-class entertainment.

This Sunday (11), the Elysium duo of Lindsey Ellis (flute) and Gwen Yorke (harp) will give a recital in St James Church in St Catherine Street.

The pair met while at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and first worked together for a performance of the Debussy trio in 2004 after which they formed the Elysium flute and harp duo. Since then they have performed at the Lymm Festival, a sell-out concert at Renfield St. Stephen's Church in Glasgow as well as a performance of the Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto in St Andrews and a recital in Cupar.

In this recital, Elysium will explore a wide variety of music from the flute and harp repertoire and, along with guest violist, Elsbeth MacLeod, will revisit the music which first brought them together.

To help with the launch of the festival, a caravan decorated by local teenagers will be on display today (Friday) outside The Shop at 6 Crossgate.

The Shop will be Cupar Arts and Heritage Project's (CAHP) headquarters for the duration of the festival, and will act as a box office and information point.

Now in its second year, the event is being run in conjunction with official media partner the Fife Herald, and organisers are promising something for everyone.

Among the musical highlights are T in the Park veterans Findo Gask and State of Affairs, while north east Fife is represented by string group The Lomond Quartet and Afro-Celtic four-piece The Moonzie Allstars.

The work of around 40 artists will be displayed at various venues around town, including The Warehouse on Kirk Wynd and a disused shop on Lady Wynd that has been given a facelift by Dundee-based artist Owen Daily.

This year, CAHP has established a visual arts award, the winner of which was selected by guest artists Dalziel + Scullion, who will be exhibiting at the old St Columba's School building on Millgate.

They plumped for Colin Andrews and his video recreation of Vincenzo Lunardi's historic balloon flight between Edinburgh and Cupar.

The festival programme also includes film screenings, performance poetry, talks and a large number of children's events and workshops.

Cupar Lidl stores have donated some wine for the big opening night tonight (Friday).

Tickets for the various events can be purchased from The Shop, or by logging on to www.attfife.org.uk.

Full programme is available online at www.cupararts.org.uk, and information can be obtained by e-mailing enquire@cupararts.org.uk or calling 07910 499 924.
