A LOCAL youngster gave the Queen a right royal surprise during her official visit to the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston last Friday.
Eleven year-old Shaun Reid, a pupil at Newburgh Primary School, couldn't contain his excitement when Her Majesty walked into the tent where he and his P6 classmates were learning how to make bread.

Oblivious to royal protocol, he boldly went up to her and declared: 'You're the Queen, aren't you?'

She told him that she was indeed the Queen — and went on to chat to him about the bread he was making.

Class teacher Anna MacGregor said: "We were taking part in an activity called the grain chain and all the children were busy making bread when the Queen and Princess Anne walked into the tent.

"They were all excited, but bold as brass, Shaun went straight up to her and started chatting!

"He showed her the bread he had been making and she seemed very interested.

"She was very good with him, very relaxed and chatty, as was Princess Anne.

"They both seemed very nice and down-to-earth and the Queen looked wonderful.

"Shaun was delighted, although a bit disappointed that she couldn't wait until his bread had been put in the oven.

"We didn't know the Queen would be coming into our tent, although we thought something was up as no-one else was allowed entry apart from us and another school.

"It was the first time the class had had an outing to the Highland Show, and we certainly won't forget it!

"Shaun is going into P7 after the summer, and he'll be something of a celebrity for some time to come."
