DRIVERS in north east Fife who get behind the wheel under the influence of drink or drugs have been given a stark warning that they will not escape the hands of the law this summer.
Fife Police are to launch a tough campaign on Monday, July 6, which carries the simple message: 'We will catch you.'

The crackdown will see an increase in patrol cars on the road as well as unmarked police cars and motobikes.

Numerous high visibility stop-points will be in place looking to pull over drivers and conduct tests where appropriate.

Patrols will take place at all times of the day, with an extra emphasis given to mornings and evenings.

In addition, police will be using tip-offs from the public to help them catch offenders.

Inspector David Houston, deputy head of road policing, said: "Tackling the problem posed by those driving under the influence of drink or drugs — or both — is a year-round issue for Fife Constabulary.

"But at this time of the year, owing to holidays and the better weather, police find there is an increase in the number of people willing to take a chance on a few drinks then going behind the wheel.

"Officers will obviously be breath testing drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but will also test those involved in a crash or anyone stopped for a moving traffic offence.

"This allows us to test a high percentage of drivers on our roads and heightens the opportunity for us to catch those in the act."

Insp. Houston also appealed to the public to continue to help police to drive drink and drugs risk-takers off the roads of Fife by supplying information regarding their suspicions.

"Young people under 25 made up one third of those caught behind the wheel last year, and I would encourage them and their friends who may be travelling with them to think twice and spend the money on public transport rather than the hefty fine which accompanies being caught," he said.

Last year, Fife Police detected 654 drivers found under the influence.
