RESIDENTS in Glenrothes and the surrounding towns and villages feel let down by Fife Council during the on-going wintery conditions, reports FIONA PURNELL.
With no signs of the wintry conditions letting up, it emerged that Fife Council were running 'critically low' in supplies of grit and were expected to run out today (Monoday 4th January.

The council is blaming the severe and prolonged adverse weat
her for an increased demand on salt suppliers, leading to deliveries of much less salt than expected.

Dr Bob McLellan, head of the local authority's transportation department, explained: "This is a situation that we and other councils never expected to find ourselves in as we had no reason to believe that our salt suppliers did not have enough reserves of salt to fulfill their contractual obligations to the council.

Calls have now been made for a public inquiry into the authority's dealing with the winter weather.

After learning of a 12 per cent increase in people attending accident and minor injury units in Fife's hospitals between December 23 and 29, council Labour leader, Alex Rowley is one man calling for an inquiry.

He told the Gazette: "It has been confirmed to me that there has been a massive increase in people seeking treatment for falls resulting in fractures, breaks and soft tissue injuries. Whilst I would not expect Fife Council to be in a position to have stopped all these falls, the fact that they have not been able to put any salt down in our main shopping areas and other areas where large groups of people congregate will not have helped.

"They have failed to keep the grit bins refilled and have failed those people who want to help themselves and the wider community by putting grit down to make our streets safer.

"Fife Council has failed spectacularly and needs to be held to account for that failure.

And Glenrothes MSP, Tricia Marwick is also demanding an inquiry into the situation: "I have not known conditions like this for 20 years and the council are right to prioritise the main roads. Having said that the lack of gritting and salt in some of the streets are causing major problems. It's important that after this critical period is over a full investigation needs to take place within Fife Council."

I have said it in other forums but I think its time to call for the resignations of Cllr Tony Martin and head of Fife Transportation, Dr Bob McLellan.

Fact: Winter comes every year.
Fact: Fife Transportation starts its winter maintainance schedule on the 1st of October each year.
Fact: None of the Fife Grit boxes were checked this year.
Fact: We don’t expect to get gritters in our priority 4 street but we do expect grit. So when the box was emptied on the 21/12 a call was made to FC and we were assured that they would be filled by Christmas.
Fact: Christmas came and went and no grit appeared.
Fact: Mssrs Martin and McLellan start blamestorming that a supplier failed to supply grit. When was this grit ordered?

Why has Management failed to manage? Who is accountable?

What is the process to take this complaint to the Ombudsman?

If McLellan spent more time doing his job rather than trying to get his name and lies printed in every paper and spinning his yarn on Radio and TV, maybe we wouldn't be in this mess.
He seems intent on passing the buck. How much does he get paid? And where does the buck stop?
Do we really pay obscene amounts to these cretins just so that they can bury their heads in the sand (or grit!) and say "its not my fault" when things go wrong?

Fact of the matter is that the council failed to provide so McLellan should resign or be fired.

Fife Councillors Please Take Note,

Dalgety Bay 05/01/2010 01:06:03
I have read the comments and the same is happening in Dalgety Bay. Hillside Avenue hill has never been gritted even although it is used by mother's taken children to school...God forbid there's a fire or even worse an ambulance is needed...I worked for the Dunfermline Transport Department based in Elgin Street 20 years ago and was told on one occasion "BY MY SUPERVISORS" to take my gritter lorry and cover "COUNCILLOR'S STREET'S ONLY"...If you you know any councillor's check their streets...They WILL be clear...It's outrageous.
