A GLENROTHES councillor has dismissed fears that a joint working deal with Edinburgh could be the first step to Fife losing its independent status.

Peter Grant, who leads the local authority in Fife, said the government had ruled out any such re-organisation during the life of the current parliament and there did not seem to be any support for it.

He added: "The shared services agenda could in fact weaken any argument for wholesale reorganisation, as such arguments are usually based on the inefficiency of having the same department replicated across all 32 councils.

"By far the best way to protect Fife in any future reorganisation is to be able to show that we are already delivering effective and efficient services."
