MARKINCH community activists are battling a bid to build a 25-metre mobile 'phone mast.
Orange PCS have asked Fife Council for the go-ahead to replace the existing 15-metre mast with one which is ten metres taller at Sweetbank Terrace.
Markinch Community Council has objected to the plan, which would see the company and Vodafone sharing
the mast site.
Community council chairman, John Morton, said members had discussed the plans at their June meeting.
He said: "This new mast will be much more visible across the surrounding area of Markinch.
The community council understands the need for an effective telecommunications infrastructure in Fife, but this mast will be an eyesore.
"The existing mast is about 15 metres high and even that is a bit of an eyesore poking through the trees.
"Increasing it to 25 metres would be an even bigger eyesore."
He claimed the planning application does not comply with planning guidance that masts should be acceptable and unobtrusive features of urban and rural areas.
The existing mast is currently based at commercial vehicle servicing and repair business, David Munro and Sons, but Mr Morton said there are plans to build houses in the area.
"It's an industrial site at the moment, but it is to become a residential area," he added.
The guidelines suggest that, if possible, masts should be installed on industrial sites rather than residential ones.
"I'm sure some of us do have some health concerns as well, although these aren't valid grounds for objection.
"It will be considerably higher and more powerful than what's there at the moment."
Fife Council planner, Stuart Wilson, commented: "Each application is assessed on its individual merits, but whilst we promote site share, ten-metres onto a mast is a lot.
"Obviously we will have to assess it very carefully."
q The council has given the green light to Vodafone's mast at Huntsman's Court in Glenrothes, despite objections that the 13 metre-plus monopole was a "blot on the landscape".
The company's Vodafone's proposed mast at Formonthills Road is expected to go before the council in the next few months.
