A RECENT survey claims fewer Fife kids are travelling to school in mum and dad's car.

But it appears there are fewer walking too.
Fife Council's annual 'hands up travel tally', now conducted as a national event by the government's sustainable transport charity Sustrans, was bigger than ever this year, with over 31,000 pupils taking
part.
The tally, completed on September 9, showed that of all Fife primary and secondary pupils walking decreased by 8.7 per cent; cycling increased by 2.3 per cent; bus travel (including taxi) increased by 12.6 per cent and car use (including Park & Walk) decreased by 6.5 per cent.
Clare Hamilton-Sturdy said: "This reduction in car use is a significant drop in one year, which we hope will continue in the future, in favour of walking and cycling.
"This will not only reduce car use, but build in the hour of exercise children need, and the half hour that adults need, on most days, to benefit health."
Fife Council has undertaken a Hands Up Travel Tally since 2003.
The count provides an annual snapshot to show how pupils in Fife travelled to school on that given day and is used to show how travel habits are changing in response to a number of initiatives in Fife and throughout Scotland, such as School Travel Plans, Active Schools, Physical Activity and Health Promotion.
However caution must be used when interpretting the results as the number of pupils taking part this year was far greater than last.
A total of 31,945 pupils from Fife schools took part in the classroom show of hands survey, compared to just 17,715 last year, and the survey was taken two months earlier in the year.
To get a truer picture of trends survey sizes would have to be more similar and obtained at the same time of year.
