Andrew aims to be a real Ironman

Andrew Forrester

Andrew Forrester

LAST year he rode a professional stage of the Tour of Britain for charity, but this year cyclist Andrew Forrester is pushing himself further and will compete in an Ironman Triathlon next month.

And he’ll be joining a team led by cycling legend and seven time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong, for the event in aid of the LIVESTRONG charity, set up by the cycling legend.

Andrew will fly to Nice in France for the event on June 24 which is set to be his biggest charity challenge to date.

The 43-year-old is currently training hard ahead of the competition which will see him complete a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, followed by a full marathon of 26.2 miles, with all 140.6 miles to be completed in under 16 hours.

Andrew told the Press: “It came from a plea put out by Lance Armstrong on Twitter last year.

“I discused it with a couple of people and they asked me why not?

“I couldn’t give them an answer so decided just to go for it.

“I’m a keen cyclist and have done cycling events in the past, but I have had to go back to basics and virtually learn how to swim freestyle all over again.

“I found myself a 13 week Ironman triathlon specific training programme which I’m just over half way through.

“There are five weeks to go and I’m starting to get nervous, but it’s a good nervous feeling.”

Andrew, who lives in Thornton, is a member of the Glenrothes Triathlon Club and says the club has been a great support to his training for the event.

He says he’s also had a lot of help from Fife Sports and Leisure Trust who have given him free access to a host of facilities around the Kingdom to enable him to train.

Andrew will complete the Long Course Event in Wales just two weeks before he travels to Nice and hopes to become the first Ironman of the Glenrothes club.

Lance Armstrong is an inspiration and a hero to Andrew, who feels extremely privileged to be taking part in the Ironman Triathlon as part of his team, and raising money for his charity.

Speaking of Armstrong, Andrew added: “Wearing the same strip as him is motivation enough for me.”
