Back to school for former pupils

FORMER Auchmuty High School pupils are being given a chance to take a trip down memory lane when the school throws its doors open to the public next month.
Former classmates from across the establishment’s 56-year history have the opportunity to re-live their school days when staff and current youngsters present a week of tours ahead of the move into the new school premises in June.
The week – entitled ‘From Old To New - Auchmuty High School Past and Present’ – will give people a chance to see how the school and education has evolved over the last 50 years.
As well as the tour the public will have a chance to view an extensive collection of photographs, written memories and other Auchmuty-related memorabilia, and will also have the chance to add their own personal thoughts and stories to ‘memory wall’.
Deputy headteacher Ian Thomson told the Gazette: “This is a unique chance for former pupils and those living close to the school to see behind the scenes of the original building before we move to the new school and this one is demolished.
“It will also give today’s pupils a chance to hear about life at the school from past generations.
“School days represent an integral part of everyone’s lives past and present and the tours will be a fantastic opportunity for those who have played a part in Auchmuty High School’s history to share their memories.”
The week-long event takes place week commencing Monday, February 18 with two daytime tours at 9.30am and 2.30pm and evening tours on Monday and Tuesday at 5pm and 6pm.
And the open-door project is just one event in a series planned, including a former pupils band and choir concert, which are designed to celebrate the life of the original school.
Even if you can’t make it to one of the events, organisers are urging former pupils to get in touch via their face book page – www.facebook.com/ AuchmutyHighSchool where they can submit any vintage photographs, comments or memories to the project.
“Lots of people will have moved away or even gone abroad once they’d left, but we’re calling on them to get involved too” said Muriel Stenhouse, who has been at the school as pupil and teacher for 44 years.
“We want to hear from as many former Auchmuty school children as possible now living abroad, so if you know anyone get them to contact us via the email address auchmutyhs enquiries@fife.gov.uk so they can be included.”
