Art imitating life in Poland and Kirkcaldy
Polish artist Katarzyna Jajszczuk
A POLISH artist is looking for local folk to take part in her latest project.
Katarzyna Jajszczok (49), who comes from Glivice in southern Poland, is currently living in Kirkcaldy with her daughter Maja (19), who is studying art at Adam Smith College.
She is keen to make a name for herself in the field of art in Kirkcaldy and Fife.
And for one of her first projects - called ‘We Are’ - she wants Fifers to take a photograph of whatever they are doing at a certain point in time - and their images will be combined in a huge collage with snaps taken by people in her home town.
Key towns
Kate, as she is known locally, hopes it will become an important social history project, showing two European towns on the cusp of potential major changes in their lives, and it could lead to an exhibition in both countries.
“Scottish people are set to vote on independence, while people in Poland have been given major European funding which will change their lives too, so there are similarities in both regions,” she explained.
“I thought it would be a good project to ask people to take one picture of whatever they are doing at a certain time on a certain day in a certain month, just to see how similar - or different -the two places are.
Daily lives
“If people are out walking their dogs or playing with their children in the park; sitting down with their families to eat dinner or shopping in the town, it doesn’t matter, it is just a snapshot of everyday lives in both countries at a particular time.’’
Kate has been in Kirkcaldy since September last year after returning with her partner Bruce McCallum who she met while he was working in Poland.
She has already spoken to members of Kirkcaldy Photographic Society and staff and students at Adam Smith College, and is keen to contact other local groups.
She is also keen to showcase the work of other European artists in the town and has been in touch with George Zielinski, owner of Cuppa Coffee Shop in the High Street about using his premises to hold monthly exhibitions.
These would be accompanied by workshops on all types of art.
Kate added: “In my role as curator of the gallery in Poland, and in my own personal art collection, I have many interesting works of art and I would like to feature them here.”
