Standing In Another Man’s Grave

by Ian Rankin

Recommended by Paul McCabe

REBUS is back, five years after his retiral, this time working for the Cold Case Unit in Edinburgh, his love/hate relationship with Scotland’s capital still continuing. A teenage girl goes missing near the A9 and Rebus discovers a string of similar disappearances on the same road over a number of years, leading him and his battered old Saab on a number of trips up north to try and solve this latest puzzle.

In the meantime, with the age of Scotland’s police force being raised, Rebus has applied to rejoin the CID, which has Internal Affairs and Malcolm Fox, the subject of Rankin’s latest novels, looking into Rebus and his past. The two meet and naturally, don’t quite hit it off.

It was always going to be a risk bringing Rebus back, but Rankin has pulled it off. In fact, this book could quite easily be read as a stand alone. You can read this excellent story without any knowledge of the previous Rebus books.

Rankin has left the ending open for the return of the bedraggled anti-hero, his application left unprocessed. But would he pass the medical?
