I’VE been watching the re-runs of Cheers on some TV channel I can’t remember – actually I’ve watched one and recorded the rest and will probably never get round to watching very many of them.
It used to be one of my favourite programmes on the box, so this film was chosen entirely on the basis that Ted Danson’s got a part in it.
Based on a true story from 1988, Big Miracle is a family-friendly movie following a Greenpeace volunteer (Drew Barrymore) and a small-town reporter (John Krasinski) who go to great lengths to save some grey whales trapped in the ice in the Arctic Circle.
A host of characters with self-serving agendas get in on the act, including the aforementioned Danson, who plays an oil company boss looking to boost his eco-credentials ahead of a controversial Alaskan drilling expedition.
Then there’s an attempt to boost George Bush’s presidential campaign and even the Russians sending an icebreaker – everyone’s got a motive for getting involved.
It’s not a bad way to spend an hour and a half or so in the company of your kids. Personally, I still prefer my re-runs of Cheers.
