New Year’s Eve
Recommended by Gordon Holmes
HAVING by chance arrived a few days earlier, there was only one day we could really watch this film, so it was we spent the evening of December 31 at last year’s New Year’s Eve party in New York.
This is one of those ensemble cast pieces in the vein of ‘Love Actually’ and ‘Valentine’s Day’, where a whole host of seemingly separate characters are linked by ever more complicated threads around one big event.
For the first 20 minutes you play ‘spot the well-known face’ as each character is introduced and at times, there is so much going on that it’s difficult to keep track of whose story interlinks with who.
It all revolves around preparations for the New Year’s Eve celebrations in New York and as is often the case in this type of film, some stories work quite well, some are not fully developed and others should have been left on the cutting room floor.
Among those popping up are Hilary Swank, Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sarah Jessica Parker, Zac Efron, Katherine Heigl, Ashton Kutcher and many, many more.
It’s light, fluffy and far too feel-good to be realistic but for an uncomplicated diversion it’s worth a look.
