LOCAL audiences will be able to enjoy a sneak preview of a new musical by young Newport writer-composer Finn Anderson next month before it heads off to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

‘Streets’, a gritty, fast-paced tale of street crime and gang rivalry, was premiered last year to rave reviews.

It’s been described as ‘an exciting, emotional and entertaining piece combining musical theatre, drama and physical theatre to explore young love, the want for something more and the power of peer pressure and addiction.’

IMPACT

Now the production is back with a new cast and re-worked script and songs that critics predict will have an even greater impact on Scottish audiences.

It will take to the stage for one night only on June 15 at the Gardyne Theatre, Dundee, and will run from August 3-11 at the Fringe.

Finn — who is still only 19 — came up with the original storyline and composed all the songs for the musical, which is performed by a young Scottish cast. He is also producing and directing the show this year.

Said Finn: “Contrary to what many people might assume, this is not a street dance or hip-hop musical.

“My aim with ‘Streets’ from the outset was to create a piece which, as well as appealing to keen musical theatre goers, would also attract a fresh, next-generation, audience.

“It is a joy to be working with such a talented group of young Scottish performers to realise this vision.”

With no funding, ‘Streets’ is relying on sheer commitment and dedication from its cast, who hope that the support of the public will make the show a success.

Commented assistant director Rosie Stanford: “There is a great buzz in our rehearsal room.

“We all have a sense that we are working on something very exciting.”
