A TALENTED Kirkcaldy artist diagnosed with schizophrenia is hosting an exhibition of his work.

Allan Beveridge has lived for years with his illness, but has found painting to be a great outlet and an ideal way to release his emotions.

His varied collection of work – which includes scenic views, wildlife, sporting images, portraits and incredible images from his mind – will go on display in his exhibition ‘Instinctive Art’ at Abbot House, Dunfermline, from Tuesday, July 17, to Sunday, July 22.

He hopes the exhibition will not only give him the opportunity to sell some of his paintings, it will give a more positive impression of people living with schizophrenia, instead of the all-too-often negative image portrayed in the media.

“I’ve been working on paintings for the exhibition since November last year,” said Allan. “In the last few weeks, I’ve been working so hard I’m exhausted.

“I hope people will like my work, but I also want to show a different side to people with schizophrenia. There’s a lot of misinformation out there and sensational stories giving the wrong impression.

“I’m simply trying to do my best by doing something I enjoy. My wish is to be the best human being I can be.”

Allan’s passion for art goes back to primary school when he received a commendation in the Fife Primary Schools Art Competition in 1958. He also studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee.

He’s won prizes in the Shell Fife Art Exhibition in 1985 with his creation ‘Annual Dance of the White Mice’, and in 2005 for a painting of Crail Harbour, now part of NHS Fife’s art collection.

His work has been exhibited at the Mayfair Gallery in London and three of his pieces of work are held by the gallery and museum of London’s Bethlem Royal Hospital, a specialist centre for the treatment of mental illness, and one of them – ‘Me, Myself, I’ – has recently been on loan to the prestigious Wellcome Collection in the capital for an exhibition ‘Brains: The Mind as Matter’.
