I DID wonder how many Kaiser Chiefs singles I could name, then on hearing Souvenir: The Singles 2004-2012 (Fiction), it all came flooding back.
I needn’t have worried as the album opens with ‘Oh My God’, ‘Ruby’ and ‘I Predict A Riot’ all high energy hits and defining songs for the band.
There are more of course with ‘Everyday I Love You Less And Less’ continually played and ‘On The Run’ particularly inventive. Of these 16 songs two newly written tracks appear and now released as a single this week, ‘Listen To Your Head’ starts with vocoder vocals into a building anthem as good as any previous outings.
Currently touring the US on the success of this new single they return here for T In The Park.
I did wonder how many hits would spread on to a compilation by Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band and was surprised to see it was a double CD. Still, with the stompin’ ‘Old Time Rock And Roll’, ‘Hollywood Nights’ and ‘Night Move’s opening his collection I was more optimistic seeing Ultimate Hits: Rock And Roll Never Forgets (Capitol).
Twenty-six songs in all and with ‘Against The Wind’, ‘Mainstreet’ and ‘We’ve Got Tonight’ following on there were more that I had forgotten.
Even from this year, ‘Downtown Train’ and ‘Hey Hey Hey Hey (Going Back To Birmingham)’ have been top airplay tracks on American radio and my research shows they sold in excess of 51 million album sales to date, so maybe the double album is justified after all.
Not for resting on past hits Ultravox return with a new album and their best known personnel line-up. Brilliant (EMI), must be their first new material in nearly 30 years yet they can still achieve to sound fresh but still recognising their electro heritage.
Midge Ure still has the voice we remember and with that flavour of New Romantic throughout even the fans of those early years will be tempted to buy their first CD of the year. Midge has put together an autumn tour playing Clyde Auditorium on October 7.
