Music Matters - with John Murray

I first heard Skerryvore when requested to play their ‘Hector The Hero’ last month at a wedding for the first dance.

With a six piece line-up and instruments like pipes, accordion and fiddle you may have slotted them under ‘traditional music’ especially coming from tiny Tiree.

However with fans now on a global basis and tours to suit you will find a modern, original and eclectic band evolved from their beginnings four albums ago.

World Of Chances (Tyree), has universal appeal helped by the award winning writings of Alec Dalglish and perfectly heard on ‘Summer High’ which the national DJs would be raving about if they had come from the US.

On tracks like ‘At The End Of The Day’ and ‘Hey Hey Hey’ the old squeeze box become a hip integral part of the melody while ‘The Showman’ is a rock instrumental where fiddle, accordion and guitar all share the limelight.

Last weekend you may have heard Alistair Griffin perform his ‘Just Drive’ composition as the theme to Formula 1. Check out his new album Albion Sky (Dramatico).

Of course this weekend you should be off to the Falkland estate for the Big Tent Festival and if you missed the supplement in last week’s Press then quite aside of the environmental activities, a full music programme over several stages has an impressive line up even outside the headliners Salsa Celtica (Sunday) and The Proclaimers on Saturday.

The Scotch Broth children’s singalong opens both days at 10.30 in the Wee Shindig tent, essential for primary age. Saturday has Anderson, McGinty, Webster, Ward & Fisher with great harmonies from Dundee at 4.45 p.m. followed by the joyous ladies from the Coaltown Daisies at 6.30.

Sunday has a reggae flavour at 11.45 a.m. with Mike Delaitre from Mauritius as Lion Spirit Music, the wonderfully acoustic sounds of Kim Edgar from Edinburgh at 3.30 and award winning Karine Polwart from the Burns Unit with some original folk at 6.15 pm.

There are songwriting sessions each day with the recording artists and even belly dancing, zumba and salsa over the weekend.
