Packed autumn programme at Dundee Rep

DUNDEE’S industrial heritage provides the inspiration for two new productions by Dundee Rep Ensemble that form part of Dundee Rep’s ‘exciting and vibrant’ new season.
The Rep has just announced its autumn 2012 programme, which includes dance, music and comedy as well as drama from its own award-winning theatre company.
‘Mill Lavvies’ by Chris Rattray is in fact making a welcome return to Dundee, having first been staged there in 2002.
Set in the early 1960s in a Dundee jute mill, the play follows five men as they escape the work, noise and drudgery of the shop floor, sharing stories, banter and their dreams in the sanctuary of the mill lavvies over a typical working day.
The Mill Lavvies features much-loved songs by Dundee’s own Michael Marra, including ‘If Dundee was Africa’ and ‘Big Wide World Beyond the Seedlies’.
The jute mills also form the backdrop for ‘She Town’ by award-winning writer Sharman Macdonald, which is to make its Dundee debut in September. Set in the ‘backies’ of pre-war Dundee, ‘She Town’ follows the women and girls who live in the tenements, play in the streets and work in the jute mills.
Friendships, loyalties and family ties are challenged as tensions rise among the community of women.
Following the success of previous community tours, Dundee Rep Ensemble are on stage for just three nights with Paul Godfrey’s adaptation of ‘Whisky Galore’ this autumn before setting off on a tour of nine community centres.
Meanwhile the drama continues with Frantic Assembly and National Theatre of Scotland, who present ‘Beautiful Burnout’; the Gilded Balloon & Tron Theatre Company with ‘Casablanca: The Gin Joint Cut’ and ‘Singin’ I’m No A Billy, He’s A Tim’ and ThickSkin theatre company with ‘The Static’ and ‘The Incredible Adventures of See Thru Sam’.
‘One Pig’, by British musician Matthew Herbert, records the life of a pig from birth to plate, while Broadway and West End smash hit ‘The Vagina Monologues’ is back with an all new star cast, including TV favourite Clare Buckfield (Two Point Four Children), and the feisty Vicky Entwistle (Janice Battersby in Coronation Street).
Comedian Hardeep Singh Kohli stops off on his national tour with his unique Indian Takeaway in October, and in September the legendary Barbara Dickson performs in concert with Nick Holland.
