Rab returns to the Fringe

RAB Noakes makes his comeback to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year and the Fife-born vocalist, keyboard and guitar player is attracting a lot of interest.

The 65-year-old, who has been involved with chart-topping band, Lindisfarne, and with the legendary, late Gerry Rafferty, appears at The Acoustic Music Centre at St Bride’s.

Rab’s first album was released in 1970 and now the St Andrews-born musician, has his own record label, production company and studio.

He has been one of Britain’s leading singer-songwriters and toured extensively.

Glasgow-based Noakes was born in 1947 and he was initially inspired by the success of Bert Jansch and The Incredible String Band.

He he began touring in Britain and Denmark and five Noakes songs appeared on albums by Archie Fisher and Barbara Dickson.

Noakes worked with Terry Melcher on an album for former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr’s record label and then teamed up with Glaswegian musicians including Brendan Moon, Lorraine McIntosh and Andy Alston to form Gene Pitney’s Birthday.

This grew into The Varaflames whose members have included harmonica ace Fraser Speirs, Rod Clements of Lindisfarne, guitar ace Jerry Donahue, Deacon Blue’s Ewen Vernal and Pick Withers of Dire Straits.
