Edwin Starr, Caesars, Kirkcaldy, 199?

‘War - uh - yeah, what is it good for?’ Anyone who doesn’t recognise the opening line of Edwin Starr’s hit War has surely been hiding under a rock for the past 47 years.

Written as a protest song at the height of the Vietnam War, it was originally a track on a Temptations album, but once Edwin gave it his distinctive powerful treatment it rocketed to number one and has remained an iconic anthem ever since.

Other songs such as Headline News weren’t so successful commercially, but became classics on the Northern Dance scene. Edwin Starr was the last person I would have expected to see in a Kirkcaldy club, but my goodness, seeing him perform War live was an experience I’ll never forget.
