Kennoway mum will jump for charity
Nicole McKenzie, charity skydive, CLAPA
A YOUNG mum with a fear of heights will take a leap of faith this month when she skydives for charity.
Kennoway resident Nicole McKenzie (21) was inspired to face her fear and fundraise for the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA) due to the help and support the charity offered her family, when her daughter, Hailey, was born with Pierre Robin sequence.
Hailey’s condition meant she was born with a cleft palate and a small chin. Hailey McLuckie, who is now 18 months old, had surgery at seven months but still faces problems with her eyes and ears.
Ms McKenize said: “When Hailey was born CLAPA gave me a starter pack with specially designed bottles and information. They also run confidence camps for older children, that Hailey could go to later on.
“A friend who also received help from CLAPA and I decided we wanted to do some fundraising and when this came up I decided to do it, even though I’m scared of heights.”
Ms McKenzie will be diving in tandem with a trained instructor. She’ll jump from a plane at 10,000 feet and experience a 5000 ft free fall at around 120 mph before the instructor pulls the parachute.
She said: “I’m excited but a little scared. I guess I’m just going to bite the bullet.”
Ms McKenzie has already raised £370 out of a target of £400, and has covered the costs of the dive herself, so all money will go directly to CLAPA.
She added: “Anything beyond the target will be a bonus.”
