YOUNG boffins from Elie Primary School are celebrating after winning a national science competition.

The East Neuk pupils picked up the top prize of a trophy, £250 for their school and the title of Primary Showcase Award winners at the Celebration Of Engineering and Science event, held at the Glasgow Science Centre earlier this month.

The pupils, all members of Elie Science Club, managed to fend off the competition from other schools by wowing the judges with their ‘Hydrobathe’ invention.

Tasked with ‘thinking up and developing an innovative idea related to renewable energy’, it was club member Craig Campbell who had the ‘Eureka’ moment of adapting hydro-power, the use of falling water - usually from dams, to a smaller setting of drains.

Assisted by teacher Jacqueline John and pupils Mollie Stevenson P7, Eleanor Pendry P6, Morgan McAlpine-Wemyss P6, Emma Aston-Braker P5 and Digby Pratt P5 idea was evolved and a device was created for converting energy from waste water moving down a pipe, into electrical energy.

That energy could then be used to power lights and other electrical appliances.

But designing the device wasn’t enough on its own – the pupils had to make a prototype and take it through to the judging panel.

There, they were questioned about their invention before being given the good news.

Head teacher Maggie Mackay, said of the win: “What a marvellous achievement for a small school of only 39 pupils.

“Science has been a major focus this session at Elie, with all pupils offered the chance to join either a junior or a senior after-school club.

“It looks as if this work has really inspired our pupils.”
