EAST of Fife communities have been giving Fife’s Coastal Path a giant spring clean before the holiday season begins.

More than 1000 people in 40 groups from Culross to Wormit have been picking up rubbish from beaches and shorelines in the ‘Let’s Boast about our Clean Coast’ campaign.

The clean up has been organised by Fife Council to help tackle the problem of illegal dumping, land based and marine litter which is an eyesore and can be dangerous to people, wildlife and pets.

A group of pupils from Waid Academy took on the challenge of cleaning up the coast from Anstruther to Pittenweem.

Waid Teacher Kenneth Brown said: “We had a productive day clearing rubbish washed up by the winter storms, and learned a lot from countryside ranger, Deirdre Munro, about how this can impact local wildlife.

“The pupils are all studying for their Steps to Work award which puts a focus on outdoor education and has involved them learning a wide range of practical skills.

•Pictured on the clean-up are Jordan Smith, Andrew Gay, Tom Anderson, Todd Robertson, David Clarke and Kieran Murray.
