The Ayton brothers were born in St Andrews to David Ayton snr, a Scottish professional golfer.

However, the golfing dynasty began with their grandfather William Ayton.

He was one of eleven founding members of St Andrews Golf Club.

Their father, David snr, was placed third in the 1885 Open Championship held at the Old Course, St Andrews.

Laurie served as club captain in 1953 and his son, Laurie Ayton jnr was on the 1949 Ryder Cup team
