KIRKCALDY man Matt Allitt will put his best foot forward next month when he runs his seventh marathon in aid of charity.
The 40-year-old will be pounding the streets of Scotland’s capital on May 27 when he joins thousands of runners taking part in this year’s Edinburgh Marathon.
Although running the 26.2 miles is not new for Matt, who has previously completed six marathons including those in London and New York, he has set himself a new goal and is running for Breast Cancer Care, a charity which is important to him.
He told the Press: “You should always take the opportunity to run for a good cause when you do these events.
“Three separate people from my close friends and family circle have had breast cancer in the last few years so it is something close to my heart.
“I will get that much needed extra motivation during the marathon when I think about who I am running for.
“I’m looking to complete this one sub three hours. Three hours 15 is my personal best, so hopefully I can do it faster.
“It’s pretty tough and quite a challenge, there’s not many runners who can do it in that time, but that’s my aim.”
Matt, who works as a sales manager for a Glasgow radio station, has been taking his running seriously for the last 10 years, and ran his first marathon in 2002.
Since then he has completed another five and raised money for different charities.
With just over a month to go, Matt is busy with his preparations and putting in a lot of hard work in terms of training.
He said: “I do five sessions a week and I’m running between 45 and 50 miles a week.
“A local guy who is a triathlete has put together a training programme for me.
“I’ve been running up and down the hills in Beveridge Park.
“Kirkcaldy is a great place to go running. There are so many places to go within five or 10 minutes of the house.”
Dawn Stanley, events officer for Breast Cancer Care Scotland, said: “The money Matt raises will be used to support the charity’s services which offer emotional support, practical advice and a wide range of local support services.”
