PDSA Retail Store Volunteer of the Year, Richard Gilmour at the Glenrothes shop surrounded by staff and well wishers
A GLENROTHES volunteer has scooped the top UK wide charity award, reports NEIL HENDERSON.
Directors of the PDSA charity, along with Volunteer UK and Pets At Home have chosen Kingdom Centre store helper, Richard Gilmour as their Retail Volunteer for 2011.
Richard, who has worked at the shop for the past four years has been selected following a search amongst 5,300 staff at the charity’s retail stores, throughout the United Kingdom.
Fellow helper Rose Yule, who made the nomination was ‘thrilled’ that Richard’s contribution had been rewarded and added: “He’s a marvellous volunteer and deserves this recognition, just look at the amount of well wishers here today, he really is an exceptional person.”
Store manager, Janice Anderson was also full of praise, she told the Gazette: “He will always go that extra mile to help and has a fantastic rapport with the customers.
The charity have been running the awards, know as the ‘PDSA Oscars’ for nine years, with the 2011 competition receiving more nominations than ever before.
Richard received the award from Janet Compton, Head of Volunteer Service for the PDSA in front of a packed shop full of well wishers.
She told those present: “Nominations had been particularly strong but Richard’s really did shine through and it was his incredible dedication that the eight judges were impressed with.
“His sense of humour, impeccable customer service skills and enthusiasm reflected the true spirit of volunteering and makes him a huge asset both to the store and to PDSA as a whole, he is an ideal role model.” Richard who was presented with a, trophy, certificate and £50 worth of vouchers, has also recently completed a sponsored walk which raised £615 for the charity.
A bashful Richard later said: “I can’t believe I’ve been given this award, when I found out that I’d been nominated and then had won I was shocked, but of course very pleased.”
“I’ve never been given anything like this before and it’s great to see so many friends here, I’m really overwhelmed.”
