CHICAGO has its Bulls, New York has its Knicks and Boston has its Celtics.
Now youngsters in Levenmouth are getting in on the act by creating their very own basketball ‘franchise’, the Levenmouth Monsters.
As a diversionary tactic to get teens off the streets and into a safe environment where they can participate in sport instead of getting involved in mischief, a twilight basketball project was set up in May at Leven Swimming Pool.
Training has already proved to be a big hit with local youngsters.
The area’s Chief Inspector, Graeme Kinmond said: “The sessions have been very well attended and those who have been going along have already come up with a name for their team – the Levenmouth Monsters.”
Similar diversionary projects are a regular sight around Levenmouth, with football and discos also popular among the area’s youth.
Councillor Tom Adams said: “The twilight basketball has been really positive.
“But it’s not just about the basketball, it’s the way that, during the breaks, the youngsters are allowed to talk about different issues.
“I hope this gets rolled out across the rest of Fife, it’s been brilliant.”
