£23 million paid to women

WOMEN workers at Fife Council have shared in over £23 million in compensation over the last six years, it has been revealed.

The settlements were prompted by plans for changes to the Glenrothes-based local authority’s wage structure in 2007, which showed that the equal pay act, which became law 37 years earlier, had not been fully implemented.

It is estimated that around 4,500 women - including catering, cleaning and home care staff - were eligible to raise claims.
