  • Eight phone lines not available
FIFE Council's contact centre will be hit by industrial action next week, meaning eight of its most frequently used public phone lines will not be available.
The phone numbers affected include general enquiries, housing repairs and money and payments.

Around 50 contact centre workers will be on strike from Monday to Friday as part of a national dispute over pay.

The employees are all members of trade union UNISON, which last week warned local authorities across Scotland of continued selective strike action over the coming weeks.

The contact centre strike follows two recent one-day strikes involving UNISON, Unite and GMB members.

Sharon McKenzie, HR manager at the Council, said: "This time the majority of council services aren't going to be affected by the strike, so schools and other buildings will be open and bins will be collected.

"UNISON is only asking its members working in our contact centre to join industrial action - although they have indicated the action will last all week.

"It will obviously be harder for customers to contact some services. We won't be able to answer eight of the most frequently used public phone numbers."

Talks between union officials and CoSLA over pay are continuing at a national level.

Matt Smith, UNISON's Scottish secretary said: "We welcome this offer of talks, as we have always said that this dispute will only be settled by a negotiated settlement which is realistic and not merely a repeat of the last offer."

A spokesman for Fife's UNISON branch said information would be sent out to members to update them on local action.

A spokesman for GMB said the union was yet to discuss its next move with members, however further industrial action has not been ruled out.
