While most people shivered their way through one of the coldest winters on record, St Andrews University graduate Sarah Thomson spent her time planning an ascent to the South Base Camp on Mount Everest.
Once there, the Glenrothes-based policewoman will be tackling Kala Patthar, a nearby peak of 18,500 feet, to raise money for charity.
She told the Citizen this week: "The planning stage is more or less complete and, between February 27 and March 24, I intend climbing with only a guide and a porter to help with the equipment and supplies.
"I've been interested in climbing for some time and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2000 while a student at St Andrews - even though half the party ended up with altitude sickness."
She attended St Andrews University from 1998 until 2001, graduating with a BSc in geography and geoscience.
