Flood of complaints over Kinness Burn

ST ANDREWS residents, whose lives have been blighted by regular flooding of the Kinness Burn, were out in force last week.
More than 100 people crammed into a public meeting in the town called by Fife Council to discuss how the problems might be resolved.

They heard Derek Crowe, the council's senior manager for roads and engineering, and Councillor Tony Martin, chair of the environment, enterprise and transportation committee, explain what the authority was prepared to do to help alleviate the floods which caused particularly significant damage and disruption in November 2009.

After a period of torrential rain, the burn broke its banks and flooded homes and gardens.

Angry residents told the council representatives that Kinness Burn Road was liable to flood even when the burn did not break its banks, blaming a lack of maintenance and allowing 'berms' — the large silt and vegetation deposits — to alter the water course.
