ON February 1, 1910, Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton — one of the principal figures of the period known as 'the heroic age of Antarctic exploration' — opened the new science department at St Leonard's School in St Andrews.
He visited the 'auld grey toun' during a strenuous schedule of public appearances, lectures and social engagements across the country throughout that year.
At St Leonards, it is recorded, he was given a rapturous welcome by schoolgirls wearing penguin costumes — something he did not find particularly amusing!
One hundred years on — to the very day — his grand-daughter, the Hon Alexandra Shackleton, will tread in his footsteps as she commemorates his visit, speaking to the pupils and taking part in a special ceremony to mark the occasion.
