New lease of life for St Andrews shops

MARKET Street received a new lease of life this week when business premises that have lain empty for years finally started to show signs of life.
The former Woolworths shop has been revamped and re-opened as convenience store NisaExtra, and the property formally occupied by Curry's is now under offer for retail use.

And last week Fife Council gave developers the green light to open up a new restaurant and bar on the site of the former Murray Mitchell butchers shop.

The new moves bring to an end a rare period for the busy street when shopfronts have been boarded up and retail space left empty.

Woolworths closed just over a year ago when the famous department store became an early victim of the recession.

Prior to that, in October 2008, poor health forced butcher Murray Mitchell to close the doors on his family-run business for good after more than 80 years at 110 Market Street.
