St Andrews Rotary's ''first lady'' hands over the reins

Sylvia Donaldson, the first lady president of the Rotary Club of St Andrews during its 80th year, has handed over the chain of office to her successor, retired senior manager in the Royal Bank of Scotland, Dennis Hopper.
Born in Tayport, Dennis was educated at Bell Baxter High School, Cupar, and Buckhaven High Schools, joining the bank in 1957.
In a very varied career, he has held a number of posts both in branch banking in Fife, and head office departments in Edinburgh.
He became an Associate of the Institute of Bankers in Scotland in 1962 and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland in 1992.
One of his most challenging posts was head of industrial relations at the time of the bank's reorganisation.
Dennis and his wife, Lorraine, retired to St Andrews in 1998 after his 41 years' service with the Royal Bank.
His hobbies include foreign travel, sailing, skiing and photography, and he is a member of the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians, a world wide branch of Rotary. He has served as commodore of the East of Scotland fleet, and has sailed in many places including trips to Norway, Sweden and the San Juan Islands off Seattle, USA.
Other office bearers inducted at Wednesday's meeting were Alan Constable (senior vice president) and Colin Mitchell (junior vice president).
