  • Dysart film firm looks to locals to chip in with ideas and support
FIFE now has the opportunity to become a major contender in British film production.
And local people and businesses are being invited to get on board and lend their ideas and support to forthcoming projects.
Dysart-based film production company New Age Film Ltd. has just purchased the region's first full size digital movie camera with support from agencies such as Creativefife, a group of people representing the wide spectrum of creative industries in the Kingdom, and Fife Council which has also expressed an interest in developing the industry.
Once the unique preserve of film directors such as George Lucas or Peter Jackson, Fife filmmakers will now get a chance to share in the same state of the art technology - and maybe even produce a cinema blockbuster in the process.
New Age Film is inviting members of the public who have an interest in film making to submit ideas for future films to its website for consideration for future film production.
With an investment of over £30,000 for the camera alone, the company is now seeking more funding to help it buy more equipment and run local training workshops to help it break into the commercial television and film market.
"The strategy of New Age Film, with support from Creative Fife and Fife Council, is to develop a sustainable film industry in Fife with help from private enterprise," said Gavin Robertson, a cinematographer with New Age Film.
"For too long past attempts to help community filmmakers form a local film industry through publicly financed programmes have failed. We strongly feel that Fife has the potential to be a leading light in film production in the country, and we will do our utmost to make this happen."
To succeed where past efforts have failed, New Age Film, which has been based in Dysart for the past two years, looked beyond lottery grant applications and instead set about establishing contacts with the UK's leading film producers, Pinewood Studios in London.
Impressed with a demonstration of the company's most recent film 'Tunguska' – a world war two themed horror movie filmed completely in Dysart - the companies gave New Age Film the responsibility for producing special effects work for a variety of international feature films.
Since then, New Age Films has acquired the new state-of-the-art camera equipment used by the leading film producers, placing Fife filmmakers in an ideal position to negotiate feature film co-productions with London based production companies.
New Age Film is now working towards that aim and expects an exciting announcement to follow in the near future, with the promise of new opportunities for every discipline, from actors and singers to cameramen and film editors.
'Tunguska' has been nominated for an award at the Fife Creative Industries Awards being held in the Rothes Halls tomorrow night (Friday).
"I believe the people of Fife share a unique understanding of one another, exceptional to our towns and villages, that will lend a creative voice that has gone unheard for too long," said Lawrie Brewster, film producer with New Age Films.
"We have passionate stories to tell, and for once we have the means to share them on an international stage."
Anyone interested in submitting ideas for film or television production or finding out more about the company can contact New Age Film's website at www.newagefilm.co.uk.
A conference type event will then invite all those who made submissions to meet with Fife filmmakers to discuss these ideas with a view to production.
