AS Presiding Officer, local MSP Tricia Marwick held a central role as the Queen officially opened the fourth session of the Scottish Parliament on Friday.
The MSP for Mid-Fife and Glenrothes, who delivered a televised speech to the political assembly, admitted nerves kicked in the day before the event.
“On the day itself though I felt very calm – I just knew I had to do it,” she said.
“The Queen was absolutely charming and so was Prince Philip and they have this rare ability to put people at their ease.
“They certainly showed a warmth for the Scottish Parliament and mentioned they were very much looking forward to their granddaughter’s [Zara Phillips’] wedding in Edinburgh later this month”
In her speech, Mrs Marwick warned there would be a “difficult five years ahead” for families and businesses already hit by the recession.
