Long-established Kirkcaldy restaurant The Steadings has reopened under new management following a temporary shutdown.

The Bennochy Road restaurant - which is owned by national company Punch Taverns - opened its doors last Wednesday after it closed last month.

According to posters on its windows, The Steadings had simply closed to allow gas maintenance work to go ahead.

But at the time a former employee told The Press that staff at the restaurant were suddenly handed their P45s by local management on Sunday, October 13.

Speaking to the Press yesterday (Wednesday) the new manager, Teresa Davidson, confirmed this had been the case.

She said the move came after a limited company - which had been leasing the restaurant from Punch Taverns - folded, resulting in the staff being asked to leave.

Teresa said: “They were given their P45s and I was asked to take over the lease on a month to month basis.

“I was able to take most of the staff back on but some have got jobs elsewhere.

“When I took it over I had to then get safety certificates for the gas and electricity as it is a legal requirement.

“I want people to know that we are now back open and that we can take bookings for Christmas whether that’s functions or meals. The bookings we already have will be going ahead.”

Posters pinned to the restaurant windows told prospective customers the business was temporarily closed to allow for gas maintenance work and would re-open on November 1.

A pre-recorded voicemail message on the firm’s landline provided the same information.

At the time a spokesman for Punch Taverns declined to comment on the circumstances which led to the closure of the Steadings restaurant.

The spokesman said: “The Steadings is temporarily closed and we are looking to re-open as soon as possible with a new operator.”

Teresa said she welcomes regular as well as new customers to the restaurant.

She added: “I want people to know we are back in business.”

The Steadings restaurant on Bennochy Road opened in October 1969 and has proved popular with local diners over the decades since.
