BUCKHAVEN Beehive organisers say it will take nearly £1.5m to fulfil their vision of a dedicated community arts space at the former Free Gardeners Hall.

Speaking at the Levenmouth Area Committee meeting last week, Blair Denwette and Linda Judge confirmed the seven-figure sum would allow them to completely renovate the former Council-run building to include two floors with a mezzanine, plus a cafe.

“After our summer programme, we’ll look at putting applications in for funding around August or September, because it can take up to eight months to hear back,” said Blair. “Realistically speaking, it will probably be around a year before we can see ourselves working towards the start of the renovations.”

The pair also provided details of their extensive summer programme to local councillors at the monthly meeting. As well as a summer art school, funding from Creative Scotland has enabled the group to set up a community art project at Letham Glen with local college students and a professional local artist.

They have also been working with the Young Carers group to create a mosaic which will be revealed in June.

“It isn’t just about the mosaic; it’s about engaging with the young carers and giving them the support they need.”
