Jubilant about the Jubilee – that’s how one bunch of Buckhaven residents is feeling, with its party plans set to sparkle like a diamond.

Tenants from the Buchan Gardens sheltered housing complex were among the winners of a nationwide competition, in conjunction with the Co-operative, to enrich local street parties for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Co-ordinator Margaret Budge won a party pack from The Co-operative Food, after submitting an entry which convinced the judges that Buckhaven’s community spirit and plans to observe the occasion deserved a special boost.

And the tenants, some of whom will have memories of the Queen’s accession to the throne, nearly 60 years ago, were thrilled.

The Jubilee street party pack is filled with essentials for 50 people and £100 worth of Co-operative vouchers to spend on food.

Co-operative, the community-based retailer with a store in every UK postal area, provided a £10,000 party fund for royal revellers across the country who were planning parties for their local neighbourhoods and communities.

Not surprisingly, the firm was inundated with entries, and Margaret’s was one of only 100 selected.

She will be collecting the prize, including bunting, party hats, paper plates, paper cups and Union Jack hand-held flags for 50 people, from the store manager at her local Co-operative food outlet Methilhaven Road, Methil.

Margaret said: “We are all absolutely over the moon to receive a Jubilee street pack prize from The Co-operative.

“The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is the perfect excuse to bring our local community together and this prize will really help make our celebrations even more memorable.”

Helen Nunn, head of marketing for The Co-operative Food, said: “We were really impressed with Margaret’s competition entry and, as a retailer at the heart of people’s communities, we thought their neighbourhood deserved something extra special to help celebrate this right royal occasion.”

She added: “This summer is a spectacular season of events and we’re gearing up to ensure we have everything our customers need to make the most of these unique occasions and celebrate together with family and friends.”

The Co-operative is marking the festivites with a host of new products, including a teddy bear gingerbread biscuit, sporting a Union Jack tee-shirt, and limited edition doughnuts decorated with red, white and blue sprinkles*.

The retailer has also introduced two limited-edition premium own-brand British beers, appropriately named ‘Jubilation’ and ‘Salutation’.

Jubilation is a pale, golden-coloured beer made with malt from Warminster and Bramling Cross hops from Worcester, to create “a refreshing taste with a distinctively hopped finish”.

Salutation is a classic British bitter with the addition of two historic hop varieties, Goldings and Fuggles, “creating a darkly-delicious beer with a satisfying bitterness”.

The Co-operative will also be offering better-than-half price champagne and half-price Cava.
