A caring Burntisland grandmother raised £1000 to provide her grandchildren’s school with special benches to prevent children from feeling lonely or isolated.

And this week Barbara Becman, who has three grandchildren at Burntisland Primary, presented the school with three ‘Buddy Benches’ which will be put in each of the infants’, middle school and upper school playgrounds.

The benches encourage children who are feeling lonely to sit on the bench where other pupils are encouraged to invite them to play. Barbara’s fundraising campaign was so successful that she raised enough money to also buy play equipment for the school.

The benches were made by pupils and staff from Starley Hall School in Burntisland and are painted in bright colours.

Emma Clunie, depute head, said: “We are very grateful and inspired by Mrs Becman’s efforts to provide the school with these wonderful benches.”
