AN ABERDOUR businesswoman is using a smart phone app to encourage people of all ages to go exploring.

Carol Devon runs Treasure Trails in the east of Scotland – from Angus to the Borders – providing a series of trails, with participants completing a murder mystery, treasure hunt or spy mission by following set directions around historic and scenic sights in a chosen location.

Since securing the franchise in April last year, Carol has created 57 trails. Fife features heavily, with trails in Aberdour, Burntisland, Kinghorn and Kirkcaldy’s Beveridge Park, as well as Dunfermline, St Andrews and several in the East Neuk.

Now five of her trails are on the Treasure Trails Player app – Dunfermline, St Andrews, Peebles and Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, as well as a free ‘lite’ version for Perth, with more to follow.

Carol said: “You can buy the paper versions online, and we can either send them out or customers can print them off.

“The app versions will probably appeal to younger trailers, and will suit people who visit an area and decide at the last minute to try out a treasure trail.

“They’re easier to use in the rain too – as the paper versions can get damp!”

The app versions have added features, including location-triggered clues using GPS, audio, sound effects and extra local information.

“The trails are fun, and great for families,” said Carol. “When I was thinking of taking on the franchise, I went on a trail with my seven-year-old son.

“If I’d told him we were going for two-mile walk he’d have thought I was mad, but he had a great time and was running ahead trying to solve the clues.

“When we’d finished he wanted to do another one. That convinced me to go ahead.”

Treasure Trails was established in Cornwall in 2005, and there are now trails for most in towns and cities throughout the country.

Franchisees can also create tailor-made trails for special occasions or visitor attractions, with Carol having created one for Cluny Clays and worked on trails in Cupar for Fife Council. She’s also created a new spy mission trail in St Andrews for a corporate training event.
