Kirkcaldy town centre has been hit with a double blow with the news clothing stores Peacocks and Bonmarché are set to go into administration.

The Peacock Group, owner of both chains, said the decision came after discussions with lenders had broken down.

The announcement follows on from news that The Jean Scene in The Mercat is due to close on April 7 with the loss of at least 10 jobs.

The latest news was described as “desperate for the High Street” by Councillor Alice Soper.

She said: “It’s not looking good.

“Unfortunately this is a national trend. People don’t have a lot of money to spend or they’re choosing to shop online.

“In the main I think that Kirkcaldy is doing better than some other towns. We have the new coffee shop opening recently, and General George has taken over the old Acorn Pet Centre.

‘‘So, while this is really bad news for the town centre there are some small encouraging signs.”

A Peacock Group statement said it would seek a potential buyer for the Bonmarché business but in the meantime would appoint an administrator.
