EXPERIENCED nurse and midwife Patricia Cobain from Kirkcaldy has set up her own business, caring for people in their own homes.

The Kirkcaldy-based mother of four runs Person Centred Homecare, a service offering personally tailored care for the elderly, disabled or sick people.

It also offers maternity care packages from birth to six weeks to support parents to adjust to their new arrival, helping with all aspects of care, including feeding.

Each client is given a personal visit before a care plan is implemented.

Patricia (44), explained: “Every day families are struggling to cope. Many are raising children, working in demanding jobs and/or trying to care for a family member.

“Advances in medicine and healthier lifestyles are helping our population to live longer and to continue to lead more productive lives.

‘‘But the numbers also tell another story. More and more families need to help care for their parents, child or a relative, and, these family care givers eventually run out of hours in the day; the stress becomes too great and the balance is broken.

“Having witnessed this both personally and professionally I decided to set up a small business providing home nursing and maternity care to people in the community, on a temporary basis - for example after an operation for holiday relief – or on a permanent basis.

“Since embarking on my unique job I have experienced many joys and rewards, as well as responsibilities and challenges, both physical and emotional. I meet wonderful people, build fulfilling relationships, and make a difference in the lives of clients.

“It is so rewarding to help families restore some balance, order and peace to their lives and help their loved ones remain at home.

“Caring for people is a labour of love and requires a special person with the right touch.”

Patricia began her training in Fife in 1987. She then worked in various roles in Perth and Glasgow before starting midwifery training in Edinburgh in 1994.

She returned to Fife in 1996 to get married and to take up post as a midwife at Forth Park Maternity Hospital where she worked for many years. She is also a fully-trained infant feeding advisor.

She added: “Positive word of mouth brings most of our new clients to Person Centred Homecare, and that is the highest recommendation one could have.”
