A Cupar dad set himself a fundraising target of £1000 after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour last year.

Handing over a cheque on Saturday night for £10,000 to children’s cancer charity TCCL Lodge, John Menzies has smashed his initial target ten times over.

Together with his wife of 16 years Alvina, John donated the cheque at a further fundraiser – an 80s themed party at St Andrews Bowling Club.

The couple are overwhelmed by the response to John’s campaign ‘Jock’s Journey’ and continue on their quest to raise more cash. Alvina said: “We never thought we would be able to raise as much and the thought of what it will mean for the families at TCCL is amazing.”

The money will be used to sponsor 16 families who come to stay at the Lodge. The £500 cost of the stay will be covered and an additional £100 to help towards any other expenses. “The 80s party has raised another £4500 on top of that which will go towards helping at least another eight families,” Alvina explained.

Following his diagnosis, John set up Jock’s Jounrney on Facebook to help heighten awareness of renal cancer symptoms and to turn an unfortunate situation into a positive fundraising opportunity.
